Synopsis
One day, a woman named Chiyome Hesogakure with a child named Chinzō visits the Nohara family and claims that she is the real mother of Shinnosuke and takes him away to a Ninja Village. In the Ninja Village, the Hesogakure family has been protecting "the earth's navel" by blocking it with a pure gold stopper using the "Mononoke technique" that has been passed down from generation. If it comes off, the earth will wither, the rotation will stop, and the "tomorrow" of the world will be lost! I saw this in a theater despite having a very entry level knowledge of Japanese. I probably only understood roughtly 5% of the dialogue, but I was still able to get the gist of the plot. I'd say I probably understood about 70% of the main ideas. That said it was still pretty enjoyable despite my language barrier. I think if you asked me to explain the major plot points I could do a fairly good job of it, albeit with a few major questions I had. 😅
I was happy to see his dog, Shiro, get a decent amount of screen time!
I hope to someday see an English translated version. Even better, I hope to someday be fluent in Japanese so I can understand movies without subtitles!

You know the film is going to be good when you want to cry during the first scene itself! It isn't a hyper-emotional prologue or anything like that. It just evokes such a sense of wistfulness, it's almost like said scene wants the people who are fond of this cartoon to feel that way. They're playing with the ”if you get it, you get it” thing.
The newer Shin-Chan films have always had gorgeously crystal-like animation. That's a pretty unusual description but I really feel this way. Saw the first half without subs then forgot about this movie and today, I somehow finally managed to finish it with subtitles.
Grew up watching Crayon Shin-chan and it most likely influenced my sense of humor not necessarily in a good way, but certainly increased the enjoyment.
